We are pleased to announce the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA)'s 8th International Student Design
Competition a 'Memorial to a Memorable Event' - Competitors are invited to make proposals for a memorial commemorating a significant past event. The memorial will serve two purposes; to provide a physical point of reference that keeps alive the memory of the event, and accommodation to house and display relevant memorabilia/interpretive material.

The Competition continues to be supported by the Architectural Review who will publish the results as usual.
As before, the Competition is open to students from all over the world to include even those from outside the Commonwealth.

RECORD PARTICIPATION FOR AN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION IN DUBAI
The pre-project competition to design a tall building for the Za’abeel technical park in Dubai
attracted 4 651 architects to register in 2 967 teams from 108 countries around the
world. Heading the list of participating countries is Spain with 336 teams, France with
299, Italy with 250, the USA with 239, and China with 109.
The competition is organised by the municipality of Dubai and the ThyssenKrupp elevator
company, and was approved by the UIA. Former UIA president Jaime Duro will represent
the Union on the international jury. The results are to be announced in May 2009.

2009 TORSANLORENZO PRIZE
March 6, 2009, is the deadline for submitting candidatures to this edition of the
Torsanlorenzo prize, in which registrations are made at the same time as the documents
are submitted. This annual prize was designed to recognise exceptional landscaping projects
and promote the qualities of urban green spaces and environmental restoration. It is
organised for the fifth time with support from the UIA and other professional planning
organisations, notably the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) and the
Italian National Council of Architects, Town Planners, Landscape Architects, and
Conservationists (CNAPPC). Kazuo Iwamura will represent the UIA on the jury.

POSTPONEMENT OF THE RENEWABLE CITIES CONGRESS 2009
Originally scheduled for 8 – 11 March 2009 in Sydney, the World Congress of the
Renewable City has been postponed until 13 – 16 September 2009. A meeting of the
UIA work programme Architecture and renewable energy sources will take place as part
of this event, and its director, Nikos Fintikakis, will be one of the conference speakers.

REGION I PROGRAMME MEETING
On 27 and 28 February 2009, Darmstadt, Germany, will host a meeting of this regional
UIA work programme. Encouraged by its director Sebastian El Khouli, the programme
has ambitious objectives for the UIA Tokyo congress. It hopes to prepare a methodological
guide in collaboration with the other regional programmes; a training programme targeted
toward the Member Sections in Region I; an exhibition of best practices in Europe; and a
student competition on sustainable architecture followed by a travelling exhibition.
Architects in region I (western Europe) who would like to participate in this programme
are invited to contact its director.

CONFERENCE: GREEN CITIES 2009
On March 1 - 4 2009, Brisbane will host a conference and exhibition dedicated to green
buildings in Australasia. The three criteria for green architecture: value, affordability and
sustainability will be illustrated. Kenneth Yeang will be among the keynote speakers at
this conference open to builders and decision-makers.

THEORIES AND PHILOSOPHIES OF CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION
On 5 – 9 March, in Florence, the ICOMOS scientific committee on theories and
philosophies of conservation and restoration of historic buildings will study the image of
heritage, changing perception -permanent responsibilities. This conference is open to all
professionals working with these topics.
